Clinical Significance

It is useful for Screening patients with suspected monoclonal gammopathies, Diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathies, when used in conjunction with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and free light chain analysis.

Limitation

Immunizations within the previous six months can increase antibodies (immunoglobulins), as can drugs such as phenytoin (Dilantin), procainamide, oral contraceptives, methadone, and intravenous immunoglobulin (IV Ig) and anti-cancer immunotherapy. Aspirin, bicarbonates, chlorpromazine (Thorazine), corticosteroids, and neomycin can affect protein electrophoresis results.
